Nearly 80% of Americans experience acne at some point — and hormonal acne is especially common among teens, adults, and postpartum. Many forms respond to a gentler, holistic approach.

01 · Understanding acne

What happens beneath the surface

Acne is a chronic inflammatory condition that forms when pores become blocked by excess oil, dead skin cells, or bacteria. It can appear as blackheads, whiteheads, painful cysts, or lingering redness and swelling.

Acne begins deep within the follicle, and hormonal fluctuations, stress, inflammation, and disrupted barrier function can cause the sebaceous glands to overproduce oil. When excess oil mixes with dead skin cells, it blocks the pore, creating the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive.

During puberty, menstrual cycles, postpartum shifts, perimenopause, or prolonged stress, the body produces higher levels of androgens, and these stimulate the sebaceous glands — increasing oil production and making pores more prone to clogging. Stress amplifies the cycle: when the nervous system is in a constant state of alert, cortisol rises, triggering inflammation and slowing the skin's ability to heal.

  • Hormonal shifts

Puberty, menstrual cycles, postpartum, and perimenopause raise androgen levels, stimulating the glands that produce oil.

  • Stress & cortisol

A nervous system on constant alert raises cortisol, triggering inflammation and slowing the skin's ability to heal.

  • Excess sebum

Overproduced oil mixes with dead skin cells and blocks the pore — the starting condition for every breakout.

  • Bacterial overgrowth

Blocked pores create the environment where acne bacteria thrive, turning congestion into inflammation.

  • Environmental irritants

Pollution, heat, and friction add oxidative stress the barrier has to absorb — raising inflammation on already-reactive skin.

  • Comedogenic products

Heavy fillers and pore-clogging ingredients add congestion the skin then has to fight.

  • Diet & blood sugar

Blood-sugar swings influence hormone levels and inflammation — part of why acne is a whole-body process.

  • Genetic predisposition

Family history shapes oil production, pore size, and how readily skin inflames — part of why acne severity varies so widely.

02 · How it shows up

The forms acne takes

  1. Mild

    Mild

Blackheads and whiteheads with minimal inflammation.

  2. Moderate

    Moderate

Inflammatory lesions, occasional cysts, and early scarring.

  3. Severe / Cystic

    Severe / Cystic

Painful cysts, significant inflammation, and higher risk of permanent scarring — atrophic, hypertrophic, or keloidal.

Although some cases require medical care, many forms of acne respond beautifully to a gentler, holistic approach. Understanding your acne type helps determine which ingredients will bring the most meaningful change.

03 · The Skin at Peace approach

Give your skin less to react to.

Your skin lives in a high-exposure environment. What surfaces as sensitivity, breakouts, or early change usually begins deeper — as low-grade inflammation. We reduce the disruption at the source: preservative-free formulas, micro-batched weekly by an MD and a microbiologist, built to support your barrier, not tax it.

07 · Questions

Hormonal acne questions

What people with breakout-prone skin ask us most.

  • Why do I break out along my jawline and chin?

That placement is the signature of hormonal acne. Androgens stimulate the oil glands concentrated in the lower face, so breakouts cluster along the jawline and chin and tend to track your cycle rather than appearing randomly.

  • Can gentle skincare actually clear acne?

Many forms of acne respond to a barrier-first approach — harsh actives often make things worse by triggering irritation and rebound oil production. With the barrier protected and inflammation reduced, the skin can rebalance itself. Severe or cystic acne warrants medical care; gentle topical care works alongside it, not instead of it.

  • Is Bakuchiol as effective as retinol?

Bakuchiol is a plant-based retinol alternative that improves texture, supports collagen, and refines pores without irritation. For acne-prone skin that reacts to retinoids — with dryness, peeling, or sun sensitivity — it is a way to work on the same concerns without the provocation.

  • Do preservatives make acne worse?

They can. Preservatives are antimicrobials, and daily exposure disrupts the skin's microbiome, increases sensitivity, and weakens the protective lipid layer — all conditions that favor breakouts. Our products are made fresh weekly, so they don't need preservatives at all.

  • What about postpartum breakouts?

Postpartum hormone shifts are one of the most common hormonal-acne windows, often arriving alongside new sensitivity. The same balance-first approach applies, and every formula is free of the ingredients flagged during breastfeeding. See our pregnancy and postpartum guide for the full ingredient-safety picture.
